Elisabeth Kübler-Ross and David Kessler

The reality is that you will grieve forever. You will not ‘get over’ the loss of a loved one; you will learn to live with it. You will heal and you will rebuild yourself around the loss you have suffered. You will be whole again but you will never be the same. Nor should you be the same nor would you want to.

During my counselling training, I studied different theorists’ views on grief and loss and some resonated with me massively. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross and David Kessler wrote as if they were talking to me and I have since used their work in my practice when helping clients work through their losses.

If we lose someone close to us, it is important to understand that we will not ‘get over’ the loss or ‘move on’, but it is more likely that we will begin to move forward. We move forward by working through the grief we are enduring.
